Questions to consider when initiating a formal MOU

When exploring the possibilities of establishing an international agreement (MOU), it is important to ensure that the relationship serves Berkeley's mission of providing faculty and students access to world-class institutions, experiences and resources.

Faculty should consider the following questions before establishing a formal agreement with an international institution. Will this partnership...
Enhance the unit's and/or Berkeley's academic excellence?
Lead to new research collaboration or academic content?
Strengthen the student experience?
Allow for equal accessibility for all students to engage?
Have a positive impact on Berkeley's reputation?
Bring new resources or infrastructure to the campus or unit?
Have sufficient support from faculty, chairs, deans, donors, alumni, or others?
Comply with Berkeley's legal guidelines set forth by the Office of Research Administration and Compliance?
Jeopardize the reputational risk to you, your unit, and/or Berkeley by accepting funds from governments known for violation of human rights?
Involve financial commitments on behalf of Berkeley that require consultation from the Sponsored Projects Office, Business Contracts Office, or IPIRA?
Require consultation from the Berkeley International Office regarding visa options and immigration requirements for visiting scholars to and from Berkeley?
